#TropMed22 Keynote Speaker

Maurício L. Barreto, MD, PhD, MPH, will present the opening keynote at this year's Annual Meeting in Seattle, the first in-person meeting in two years. #TropMed22 will take place October 30-November 3 at the Seattle Convention Center in Washington, USA.
 
An Emeritus University Professor at Universidade Federal da Bahia in Brazil and a Senior Investigator of Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), Dr. Barreto's research in epidemiology and collective health covers different topics, with a great focus on the social and environmental determinants of health, health inequalities and the impact of social interventions on health. Currently, his major research program is around The 100 Million Brazilian Cohort investigating social and environmental determinants of health, particularly the impact of poverty reduction policies on health, using the linkage of large administrative Brazilian databases.

Dr. Barreto has published more than 600 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals; taught, supervised and mentored undergraduate, Master's, docs and post-docs throughout his life; and has been the founder and director of the Center of Data and Knowledge Integration for Health (cidacs) and deputy director of the National Health and Care Research (NIHR) Global Health Research Unit on Social and Environmental Determinants of Health Inequalities. He is an elected Fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and of the World Academy of Sciences, and an Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, he founded and continues to coordinate the CoVida Network, is a member of the Scientific Committee advising the Governors of the Northeast Region of Brazil, and is a member of the COVID-19 Specialist Group of the Inter-Academic Panel: The Global Network of Science Academies.
