Diana Cheung

My interest in tropical medicine is rooted in a sense of responsibility to work toward social justice. People who live in the poorest countries in the world suffer and die from completely preventable diseases. As healthcare workers from high-income countries, we have an  obligation to teach, train and improve the circumstances of these nations – and to contribute to the wellness of the global population. I also believe in the value of research-training partnerships between countries. The project I plan to conduct focuses on identifying key issues on access to care – from diagnosis to treatment. The organizations I am working with (Institut Pasteur-LaoLux Lab) are country-country partnerships concerned with building capacity in Laos. By sharing knowledge and technical expertise, we can help build value for the Lao healthcare system and help guide them toward the future they imagine. This is the kind of sustainable international health/tropical medicine efforts that I hope to make a large part of my life's work.
