Description: Cyst in brain. Photograph of seven year old Italian-born female who fell down five steps and shortly thereafter became unconscious for a few seconds. Vomited for a week. One month later she developed convulsions, headaches, and intermittent drowsiness. A few hours prior to hospitalization, she vomited (nonprojectile), convulsed, complained of pain in the neck and became drowsy. Physical examination showed neck stiffness, hyperactive knee jerks, positive Kernig and Babinski reflexes. The patient went into a deep coma with occasional involuntary motions and died two days after admission. At autopsy, a 250 gram, 10 x 5 cm,, white-walled cyst bulged through the gray matter of the left cerebrum. Subsequent microscopic examination of the cyst wall revealed typical scolices of Echinococcus granulosus.
